10 potted plants are given fertalizer and another 10 potted plants are not give any fertilizer. All 20 plants are the same type and are all given the same amount of soil, water and light.

In your experiment, the controlled or independent variable is the fertilizer. You have 10 potted plants with fertilizer and 10 potted plants without fertilizer. You have the ability to control the fertilizer, i.e. you put fertilizer in some plants and not in others.





The dependent variable is the outcome or results of fertilized plants versus unfertilized plants. In other words, the results, depend totally on your controlled variable of putting fertilizer or not putting fertilizer. For example, fertilized plants will grow better than unfertilized.
