What is the control and experimental group, independent and dependent variable?

I'd say the top is the control and the bottom is the experimental. Independent variable is the presence (or absence) of an open-air environment, dependent variable is the presence (or lack) of growth.

This isn't a great experiment for labeling control and experimental groups, though, because something was done to both groups (boiling the broth) and the second set was eventually un-corked. It would have been better to have three sets - one that was boiled then left open, one that was boiled then sealed and left sealed, one that was boiled and sealed, then opened. What is the control and experimental group, independent and dependent variable?
I know that the independent variable is the variable that is constant (can't be changed) and the dependent variable depends on the independent variable. God I haven't really done that in so long.
