What are independent variable, dependent variables and controlled variables?

It is easier to understand by an example: You want to know how the volume of a gas varies with an increase of temperature. You conduct an experiment to heat a volume of gas, for example in a gas syringe, over a range of temperature:

The independant variable is the temperature - this is what you are measuring the volume against.

The dependant variable is the volume, it is dependant on the temperature.

The control variable in this case is the gas pressure. Every time you measure the volume, you control (adjust) the pressure back to what it was when you started.
