What is the control and experimental group, independent and dependent variable?

http://vilenski.org/science/notebook/uni鈥?/a>What is the control and experimental group, independent and dependent variable?
In the experiment described there:

Experimental group: the flask with a straight neck that both air and microorganisms could enter;

Control: the flask with an S-shaped neck that allowed the air in, but not microorganisms.

Independent variable: it is a single variable, let's call it X, which denotes either the control or the experimental group. For example, X=0 can mean observing the control group, while X=1 can mean observing the experimental group. This variable can take only one of these two values.

Dependent variable: let's call it Y, and it denotes whether the flask had shown microbial growth, or not. So, the outcome can be either Y=0 (there was no growth) or Y=1 (there was growth, i.e. contamination). This variable too can take only one of these two values.

What You need to prove is that the dependent variable Y is somehow linked to the independent one X. You control what You do with the independent variable, and then observe the outcome: the dependent one. So, when You treat the two flasks in a different manner (one with a straight neck X=1 and the other one with a S-shaped neck X=0), You observe whether they will differ with respect to microbial growth. Then You assign Y=1 if there was microbial growth, and Y=0 if not. Obviously, this was not dependent on You, but on whether the hypothesis was correct. Then, if You find that the choice of the dependent variable (using one or other type of flask) always leads to a certain outcome (there is growth or not, i.e. Y=0 or Y=1), then You have linked X to Y.What is the control and experimental group, independent and dependent variable?
the independent variable and the dependent variable the shapes of the necks and if microorganisms could enter or not

flask 1 allowing air = experimental

flask 2 no air = controlled
