In an experiment what is the difference between a variable and a control and why are they BOTH necessary?

The Control is an example of one that hasn't been messed with, for comparison with the one(s) that have been messed with in Variable ways. Without a Control or control group, the experiment is deeply compromised as there is no accurate way of determining what happened. Regards, Larry.
