How is a control and a variable related?

Please Help!!!

This is on my homework

Thanks! How is a control and a variable related?
I'm guessing this is in relation to a science experiement or something similar? If so, an independant variable is the varieable that is changed. A dependant variable is the variable that is measured. And the control refers to all the other variables that need to be controlled in the experiment.

For example, if you were to conduct an experiement to see how quickly different amounts of water boiled; the independant variable would be the amount of water, the dependant variable would be the time it took to boil, and the controlled variables would be the type of water (tap, distilled etc.), the temperature and type of heat source, etc.
