Something really cool I learned about recently is how mycelium fungus is used in something called bio-remediation. These are basically mushrooms grown from spores which can be used to break down hydrocarbons in oil and plastics. It would be a neat project to demonstrate how this works and how much better and cleaner it is to use mycelium to clean up the earth's pollutants, oil spills and discarded plastics than the usual ways. Mycelium are everywhere out in nature and are very safe to handle and use for experiments. They are just mushrooms and mushroom spores. I am leaving a site that explains it. I think this would be a timely experiment too and very interesting since people are very focused on green approaches and technology. I don't think small demonstrations would be very hard to do at all. Good luck with your project.
